Digital Assets Marketplace for a Stock Exchange

The client
Blockstation is a financial technology platform that enables traditional stock exchanges to list and trade tokenized securities and digital assets. They needed a long-term development partner to build the core technology behind their marketplace, with genuine depth in both exchange-grade financial systems and blockchain settlement.
Project Overview
Blockstation engaged Superscript in 2017 to build the complete core technology for their digital assets marketplace. The engagement has run continuously since, evolving from initial platform build into ongoing feature development.
What we built:
- A high-performance trading engine processing thousands of orders per second
- Multi-chain settlement across Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Polygon Solidity smart contracts for digital asset custody and on-chain governance
- A secure digital currency custody solution
- Big data infrastructure for trading data
- PCI-compliant architecture with third-party KYC integration
Challenges
Regulated exchanges do not grade on a curve. The platform had to meet the performance, security, and compliance standards traditional financial infrastructure is held to, while settling assets on public blockchains that behave nothing like traditional rails.
- Performance: Thousands of orders per second with mission-critical uptime for continuous trading. An exchange that degrades under load is not an exchange.
- Custody and settlement: Secure custody across multiple chains, with smart contracts holding real assets. Mistakes here are not recoverable.
- Regulatory compliance: PCI compliance, KYC requirements, and custody standards, in a category where regulators had limited precedent to work from.
- Reconciliation at scale: Massive volumes of trading data reconciled in real time, across both internal ledgers and on-chain state, which do not settle on the same clock.
- Duration: Multi-year platform ownership rather than a fixed-scope build. This ruled out rotating contractors.
The work required expertise in exchange-grade financial systems and blockchain settlement simultaneously. Teams that have one usually lack the other.
Solution
We assembled a dedicated senior team spanning blockchain, financial systems, and high-performance infrastructure, and kept it on the platform for the duration.
Trading Infrastructure
Microservice architecture built for scale, with a high-speed order processing engine, real-time matching and execution, and availability design appropriate to continuous trading.
Multi-Chain Settlement and Custody
Support across Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Polygon, with Solidity contracts handling digital asset custody and automated on-chain voting and governance. Built reconciliation systems that keep internal records and on-chain state consistent, which is where multi-chain platforms typically break.
Compliance and Security
Secure custody implementation, third-party KYC system integration, compliance architecture, and comprehensive audit trails and reporting. Compliance was designed into the architecture rather than layered on before an audit.
Infrastructure and Operations
AWS cloud infrastructure with automated monitoring, a big data solution for trading data, and CI/CD pipelines with DevOps automation.
Results
Exchange-grade performance in production. Delivered infrastructure processing thousands of orders per second at the uptime standards regulated exchanges require.
Compliance audits passed. The PCI-compliant architecture we designed and implemented cleared audit. Our expertise was decisive in getting there.
A partnership running since 2017. What began as a platform build became continuous development. Multi-year retention on infrastructure this sensitive is the clearest signal that the work holds up.
Market entry that would have been hard to staff internally. Blockstation brought a complex, regulated product to market without assembling an in-house team spanning exchange engineering, custody, and compliance.
