Multi-Party Payout Infrastructure for Film Revenue

The client
Titlepool is a media technology company serving independent filmmakers and production studios. Their business depends on getting money to the right people in the right amounts, which in film means dividing a single revenue stream across many parties under terms that differ for every title.
Project Overview
Titlepool needed a system that could take revenue in and distribute it correctly across multiple rights holders, automatically, with a record every stakeholder could verify. That meant payment provider integration, a distribution engine that could express real contractual splits, reconciliation that holds up under audit, and contract parsing to get the terms into the system in the first place. They brought in a dedicated team rather than build that capability internally.
Challenges
Film revenue distribution is a hard money movement problem wearing an entertainment costume. A single title can involve producers, investors, distributors, talent, and guilds, each entitled to a different cut, in a different order, sometimes contingent on thresholds being met first. The order of operations matters as much as the percentages.
Normally manual process, it created three compounding problems: administrative bottlenecks that scaled with the business, disputes that were expensive to resolve because the paper trail lived in spreadsheets, and a hard ceiling on how many titles they could take on.
The platform had to:
- Automate distributions across 47 distinct revenue split scenarios, including cascading waterfall logic where earlier payouts change what later parties receive
- Produce an immutable audit trail for every transaction, so any party could verify their payment without taking someone's word for it
- Parse legal contracts to extract distribution terms, reducing manual data entry and the errors that come with it
- Integrate with payment processing and reconcile every distribution back to source revenue
- Handle growing transaction volume as the client expanded
The payment integration was the smallest part of that list. The split logic, the edge cases, and the reconciliation were the work.
Solution
Superscript provided a dedicated team of senior developers, a QA engineer, and a technical lead working exclusively on the platform. The team owned the full lifecycle, from architecture through deployment and ongoing enhancement.
Payout Waterfall Engine Built a distribution engine supporting 47 distinct split scenarios with automated calculation and real-time processing. The engine handles ordered waterfalls, where a payment to one party changes the base for the next, along with thresholds, caps, and recoupment conditions. Integrated Stripe for processing, with custom logic layered on top to handle multi-party splits that off-the-shelf payment tooling does not express.
Reconciliation and Immutable Audit Trail Every distribution is logged to a tamper-evident record, giving rights holders verifiable proof that their payment was calculated and executed correctly. This replaced manual reconciliation and, more importantly, changed the nature of disputes: instead of reconstructing what happened from spreadsheets, any party can check the record.
AI Contract Recognition Built machine learning capabilities to read legal contracts and extract distribution terms, cutting manual data entry and the errors it introduces. Getting terms into the system accurately is where payout mistakes originate, so this is upstream quality control, not a convenience feature.
Complete Platform Delivered contract management, title management, configurable payment workflows, shareable lookbooks, and reporting, built as one coherent system rather than modules bolted together.
Engineering Process Mandatory source control, CI/CD, comprehensive testing, and SOC 2 aligned security controls. Regular sprint demos, full code ownership retained by the client.
Results
The platform is in production, handling live revenue distribution for filmmakers and studios.
Operational efficiency: Distributions that took days of manual work now run automatically, freeing the client's team for growth rather than administration.
Scale without headcount: The architecture supports expansion into new markets and rising transaction volume without proportional operational overhead.
Verifiable trust: The audit trail and transparent reporting changed how rights holders relate to the platform. Payment accuracy is checkable rather than assertable.
Market differentiation: Automated multi-party payouts, contract recognition, and a verifiable record combined into positioning competitors have not matched.
The engagement became a long-term partnership, with the team continuing to support enhancements and new development as the business grows.
